Error: "Failure setting ACL policies" after Installation

The following error is observed on the console after installing Cumulus Linux:

[FAIL] Installing acl policies...failed.
[FAIL] startpar: service(s) returned failure: acltool ... failed!

  • Cumulus Linux 1.5.x
  • Cumulus Linux 2.x

Root Cause

ACL policies require the switchd daemon to be running. switchd does not run without a license file.

Diagnostic Steps

  1. Check if switchd is running:
    cumulus@switch:~$ /etc/init.d/switchd status
switchd is not running ... failed!
  2. If switchd is not running, check if the switch is licensed with cl-license:
    cumulus@switch:~$ cl-license
    No license installed!

License the switch as described in the quick start guide.
