40G Optical QSFP not Recognized on Edge-Core 5600X

Issue

A 40GB Optical QSFP does not appear in the output of cl-sfputil, and is unable to establish a link when brought up.

 

Environment

  • Cumulus Linux 1.5.3
  • Edge-Core 5600-52X
  • Optical QSFP

 

Root Cause

The 40 GB Optical QSFP module not being taken out of reset mode.

 

Diagnostic Steps

A switch may be affected by this issue if it matches the environment described above, and the following command output is observed: 

  • cl-sfputil shows SFP not detected:

    root@switch:~# cl-sfputil -p swp50
    swp50: SFP not detected 
    
  • Link state is state DOWN after interface is brought up:

    root@switch:~# ip link set swp50 up
    root@switch:~# ip link show swp50
    52: swp50: <NO-CARRIER,BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP> mtu 1500 qdisc pfifo_fast state DOWN mode DEFAULT qlen 500
        link/ether 08:9e:01:ce:e4:bf brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff
    

 

Resolution

There are no known workarounds. This issue is being tracked in bug CM-2161, and the fix is currently targeted for the release of Cumulus Linux 2.0.
